Inbox (1)

Oh, Gmail,

How that little (1) can send my heart into palpitations. How I can't resist the lure of that shiny new e-mail. How much you promise me two days after I status queried about a full. How I anticipate that you may have news on a request, even though the sender's name says "intern," and I know no agent with my manuscript has yet sent me anything through interns. This could be the time. There could be a reason. I click, anxiously, wondering what news you bring. Hoping you are not the dream agent who's had my full novel for three months and would only send through interns if she was form rejecting. I hold my breath....

Hmm, a query rejection from an agency I barely remember querying. Oh, Gmail, how you have fooled me with that precious (1). I shall not be fooled agai--

Oh, my! "Inbox (1)." My heart skips a beat.

I have 73 unread messages in my inbox at all time (never cleared them all after England) so Inbox (74) gets me all excited.

I have 11 in my spam e-mail, but I make sure my writer e-mail is always clear. Just having "Inbox (11)" in the yahoo account when I have both tabs open drives me nuts.

By the way, the "Inbox (1)" at the top of this screen is getting me all excited, lol.

It must be part of being a writer, I swear. There is so much hope linked to that unopened email, isn't there?

All it takes is one agent to believe in our books, just one...

I'm a recently agented YA writer and am still receiving requests and rejections from query letters. And that biological response you describe from seeing an unopened email from an agent you queried still happens to me. I'm not sure it will ever go away, lol.
And regarding emails from interns and assistants, it's not always bad news. One of my offers of represention started via an assistant emailing me to tell me that the agent who had my ms wanted to set up a time to talk. So, you never know. Just keep clicking.

Yup. I've had an agent for a couple months now - still get excited about that Inbox (1). It could be an email from my agent! It could be news! It could be my new beta read! All sorts of things to get excited about. :D

I have the same issues. I wait for the mailman, even on days he doesn't come. Today, my heart stopped when I opened the mailbox. I got a big envelope from an unnamed publishing house. I don't remember sending them anything, I thought...You never know, maybe in a wild rage of submissions I sent them something. I took a breath and carefully opened the BIG envelope. It was a post I had won from a blog contest. Sometimes I'm such a mess...

Okay, I have to comment, because I am laughing my head off right now. I was clicking through my open tabs and when the words Inbox (1) popped up I had a knee-jerk reaction of excitement, because yay, I had mail! I didn't realize it had gotten this bad. I keep reading it, and it keeps making me excited. This is so hilarious. Know now that you're not the only one who feels this way!
