New Year, New Goals

My academic pursuits have become a sorry excuse for me to avoid my writing. Gone are the days of finishing up a chapter before midnight--I'm cramming for physics class instead. I can no longer doodle character sketches in my English notebook--I need to ace my state exams.

Over 2009, my writing slid to the back burner as I took a hiatus from traditional high school and volunteered abroad. Was it worth it? Of course. I sacrificed a social life and sophomore year for an incredible opportunity I look back on with longing. But I never anticipated 2009 to lack what I love best about my life: my writing. I lugged my old laptop across continents hoping to find the perfect setting for my next novel. My idea of the perfect getaway, crammed with action and quirky people, left me exhausted and jet-lagged.

I'm determined not to let my writing slip past me again. I'm now employed as a reporter (woohoo!) and I need to take my writing to the next level. I may be concentrating a tad bit less on my novels, but I'm determined to do it all. My family has always joked that I'm a jack-of-all-trades with seven million hobbies, but this year, I'm going to prove it!

My goals for 2010 are simple: conquer my latest novel and polish my clip portfolio. I'm excited and enthusiastic about my job and eager to prove myself. As for my novel, I've waited until I thought I was skilled enough to tackle a new genre and my favorite plot. Can I do it? I'll find out next New Year's Eve.

What are your writing goals for 2010? Ambitious, or are you going to take a year to learn as much about life as you can for novel fodder? Are you going to tackle fiction, non-fiction, or both?

We'll face the new year armed with our goals. 2010 is going to be awesome.

(I hope.)

My 2009 writing was very interesting. I started off the year trunking the novel I wrote for NaNo in 2008. It was horrible, I knew it, and it only took three chapters of crits from two different betas (who probably were looking to get out of reading it by giving me the early chapter crits because it was THAT BAD) before I said, "Okay, thanks. Where'd I put that trunk key?"

A few false starts later, a huge revision of another 2008 novel, and finally in July I seriously started writing a new novel. I finished it in late September, wrote a novel in November for NaNo, and suddenly wrote another one in December. So out of nowhere I went from zero completed books in 2009 to three.

This year I hope to spread out the noveling a little better. I'm going to take my writing vacation later in the year, when I will hopefully have a better idea of what I want to write.

Of course, other goals include getting an agent (who loves more than the concept of my book, thank you) and maybe selling a book.

Also starting a blog and keeping it updated.

Here goes, 2010. Lucky year ;-)

My goals are similar to Sage's. I would love to keep my blog up to date (as I have this week- go and check it out: http://marquitamarks.blogspot.com/)

Also, I want to complete my novel (which I am halfway through- YEAH!) And I would like to get a short story published before the end of 2010. I too, would love to find an agent who likes my ideas and ME. I mean, if anyone knows me, I am a helluva lot to take in :) Anyway, great post and I am excited to see how everyone does with their goals in 2010.

I saw Hannah's comment on The Rejectionist's review of Shiver. I feel your pain, and can't wait to read your book.
